Why do I volunteer?

Growing up in an Indian-American household, my parents have always made sure that I am connected to my roots through annual trips to India. While visiting, one of the most prominent differences I’ve noticed is the number of families living on the streets. I have  always wondered two things: “What did I do to get so lucky?” and “Why are they so unlucky?” Though I still have not received answers to these questions, what I have learned is that I can make a difference. From this understanding, I began volunteering when I was 6 and started off as any kid would, through lemonade stands and handmade greeting cards. From there it became something more and I organized my first 5k run as a youth leader; since then I have organized 3 more.  When I am in India, I visit the shelter we donate funds to and I am able to see how each child has grown happier and healthier. The organization of the 5K and the reasoning behind it is a representation of both leadership, teamwork, and service. By engaging in service projects I have developed a desire to make a positive impact on  my community, while leading others to do the same.
